Cash-strapped TNEB proposes tariff hike

JAYA MENON
CHENNAI, FEB 25: The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board in a desperate attempt to hive of some of its heavy financial debts, has proposed a tariff hike in the range of 10 to 12 per cent, which may be executed before March-end, the deadline set for the State Electricity Regulatory Commission (SERC) to be formed.

The tariff hike, which the TNEB hopes would help net at least Rs 700 crore, has been suggested as part of it's annual budget proposal sent to the State government by the Board members who met on Tuesday. The selection panel which will recommend members for the proposed SERC is yet to complete its task.
