Cong: Giani Puran legitimate Jathedar

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
JALANDHAR, Feb 25: In a move likely to gladden the hearts of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal's camp, the Congress today said it recognised only Giani Puran Singh as the legitimate Akal Takht Jathedar.

``We recognise only and only the appointee of the SGPC executive as the Akal Takht jathedar,'' party's state unit president Amarinder Singh told reporters here. However the PPCC chief clarified that the Akal Takht Jathedar would not be invited to participate in the party's planned celebrations of tricentenary of Khalsa from April 12 and rejected the invitation of the SAD-led Badal government to participate in the government-sponsored celebrations.

PPCC president Capt Amarinder Singh told newspersons here this evening that the Congress would not send new invitation to the new Akal Takht Jathedar to participate in the Congress-planned celebrations. He said that this was because Punjab Congress had already extended an invitation in this regard to the the then Akal Takht Jathedar. However, he added that the party would invite the jathedars of other four Takhts.

``There is no merit in the Congress again going to the Akal Takht Jathedar since our earlier invitation has been rejected'', Capt Amarinder said. He said the Akali Government had invited the Congress to participate in the proposed Anandpur Sahib celebrations. ``But it is too late. The Akalis never involved or consulted the Congress at any moment of the planning of their programmes'', he said, adding that the Congress representative to the recent all-party meeting held by SAD had made the PPCC's position clear.

The PPCC president said that the Congress would organise the Khalsa March carrying holy Jot which would start from Patna Sahib on April 2. The March would pass through Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and then to Punjab, Capt Singh said, adding that the respective Congress committees of these states would receive the March in their states.

He said from April 7, the March would leave for Damdama Sahib from where it would set off for Anandpur Sahib on April 8 through the Guru Gobind Singh Marg. He said the March carrying the jotSahib, Nanded.

Reacting to the installing of Giani Puran Singh as new Akal Takht Jathedar, Capt Singh said the Congress recognised the supremacy of the SGPC in religious matters since it was a body constituted through an act of the Parliament.

He said the AICC president Sonia Gandhi would also receive the Jot at Delhi along with the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit.

Among other programmes chalked out by the PPCC for celebrating the tricentenary include five blood donation camps to be held at different places in Punjab, seminars, sports events and shows for depicting the Sikh history and the legend of the 10th Sikh Guru.
