Angry mob attacks DVB HQ

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, February 25: An angry mob, comprising around 2,000 men, gheraoed the Delhi Vidyut Board (DVB) headquarters at Nehru Place and pelted stones, breaking several window panes, to protest against the DVB's steps to check power theft.

Power supply to the jhuggi cluster opposite the DVB headquarters was cut-off on Saturday night, following action by the special task force formed at the initiative of Lieutenant Governor Vijai Kapoor to check power theft.

Several `big-wigs' have been netted by the DVB for power theft and tampering of meters following a green signal from Raj Nivas. The DVB, in a statement issued today, said that a raid was carried out in the Colonel Satsangi's Kiran Memorial School (CSKM) in Satbari where a connected load of 220.99 KW was detected. ``This was illegal and an FIR has been registered in this connection,'' board spokesman Jagdish Kapoor said.

Apart from this, a raid was carried out at the New Steelbird factory in Mayapuri and 89.50 KW connected load was detected. The DVB teams swung into action even in the Kailash Apartments area of south Delhi and Azadpur village. FIRs have been registered against the guilty persons and they have been directed to pay for the electricity along with penalty with immediate effect, said the DVB spokesman.

He said that as many as 22,000 tappings have been removed from all over the city in the past two days and as many as 3,000 from the jhuggi cluster opposite chairman Virender Singh's office in Nehru Place.

DVB officials complained that the police response was slow and they arrived rather late. ``The mob was, however, dispersed following police action,'' said an official. Later in the day, a team of DVB officials spread out in the jhuggi cluster and told the residents to take a ``single point connection.''

``We told the residents that they were stealing electricity and this could not go on. There is no shortage of electricity and the residents were told to apply for the single point connection, which will be provided immediately,'' spokesman Kapoor said.
