Shaktiman takes DD to court, case to his fans

KAVEREE BAMZAI
NEW DELHI, FEB 25: Angered by Doordarshan's ``unfair'' decision to terminate his serial, Shaktiman, its star and producer Mukesh Khanna is taking Prasar Bharati to court. What's more, he will include this in the storyline for his serial next week, when the reel life Shaktiman appears in court to answer charges from a lawyer about killings in his name.

Khanna said he would approach the Delhi High Court by next week and argue for a stay on the ``wrongful'' termination of Shaktiman. He added he would also speak to Information and Broadcasting Minister Pramod Mahajan as he had ``every right to do so as a citizen of this country''.

Khanna said he had at least seven episodes in the pipeline and in the next instalment of his serial, which is aired on the National Network every Saturday and then repeated on Tuesday, he would put his screen self in the dock. ``It's part of a continuing story where a catwoman has been killing men and the editor of a paper, Durandhar -- whom I have nowmade a villain -- has been telling the world that it is Shaktiman's handiwork. Now Shaktiman will get a chance to speak to the people directly.''

He said he had done this earlier when a supari named Shaktiman hit the market. ``When my appeals to gutkha-makers had no effect and I was advised against suing them, I included a five-minute sequence against them in my serial,'' he said.

``So, since newspapers are not supporting me and DD has been unfair by reacting to planted stories, I want the people to know my view,'' said Khanna, who said he was proud to call himself a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. ``Yes, I campaigned for them during the general elections last year because I believe in Atalji and because I expected that the party would give the country five years of clean governance. And no, I didn't campaign as Shaktiman,'' he said. Khanna also reiterated his threat of taking UNI to the Press Council for putting out ``unverified'' stories.
