PUNE, Feb 26: Twenty four goals in four matches - read the goal count, on the opening day, of the Late Jimmy Nagarwala inter-district hockey tournament at the PCMC Poligras Stadium today. However, if the tall order looked unproportionate the matches did have their share of thrills particularly the one involving Pune `B' and Kolhapur `A' which was won by the hosts by a solitary goal. The all important goal was scored by Sachin Godse off his teams fifth penalty-corner in the 41st minute. With Umesh Thyagrajan taking a crack at the goal, the Kolhapur custodian did well to block the attempt. However, with the ball rebounding straight to Sachin what followed was a `no mistake' conversion, which led to the only goal of the match.
Kolhapur `A' in contrast registered a 11-1 victory over their `B' counterparts with Dayaji Patil scoring four goals, including a hat-trick, while Aslam Sheikh (3), Dhiraj Patil (2), Intequam Sheikh and Prakash Poithankar scored a goal each. For the losers the consolation came via Irfan Desai.
After four matches today, Pune `A' emerged on top, with two wins to lead the round-robin standings. First they put out Kolhapur `B' 8-0 with Sanjay Pollaiya (21st; 58th), Ajit Lakra (28th), Ravi Thyagrajan (45th - penalty stroke), Vinod Kore (47th), Santosh Musale (49th), Sachin Sawant (50th, 56th) doing the scoring. The margin however could of been 9-0 had Lucas Lakra converted an 18th minute stroke.
Later, Pune `A' score thrice via Santosh Musale (4th), Sanjay Pollaya (25th) and Ajit Lakra, off his teams eigth penalty-corner in the 52nd minute to down their `B' teammates.
