Waqar, Mushtaq dropped

AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE
KARACHI, FEB 27: Pakistan's cricket selectors today sprang a major surprise by dropping two ace bowlers, paceman Waqar Younis and leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed from a 20-strong training squad ahead of next week's Asian Test Championship match against Sri Lanka.

The camp for the match, which starts in Lahore on March 4, will commence tomorrow.

Captain Wasim Akram insisted Waqar's international career was not over while coach Javed Miandad was disappointed that he was not consulted while selecting the squad. ``We still need his experience but selectors wanted to test a few youngsters in the Test against Sri Lanka. Waqar is surely in our scheme of things for the future,'' Akram said.

Waqar, 27, was dropped from the Pak team for the first Asian Test against India in Calcutta earlier this month. Shoaib Akhtar who replaced Waqar in Calcutta took eight wickets in the match and is likely to retain his place.
