`Bhai Ranjit Singh says he's the `genuine jathedar'

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
AMRITSAR, Mar 1: Suspended Akal Takht jathedar Bhai Ranjit Singh has said that Akali Dal president and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his supporters should have no doubt that he continued to remain the "genuine jathedar".

``Not only I, but the Sikh Sangat is also of the view that the confusion is only in the Badal camp," he told reporters here last evening after attending a major congregation at the Akal Takht for the first time after his suspension.

Singh was responding to Badal's remark that there could be "no two jathedars" after Giani Puran Singh was installed as acting jathedar.Ranjit Singh claimed he was the "genuine jathedar", which could be gauged from large congregations attended by Sikhs at functions held at Goindwal Sahib and Gurdwara Khadoor Sahib in the last three days.

Soon after his address to the kirtan darbar at the Akal Takht, he said he was not bound to reply to the show-cause notice served on him by the SGPC executive committee meeting dominated by Badalloyalists.

"They should get a reply from those who are their paid employees," he said, pointing to 10 Badal loyalists in the SGPC executive, who after a meeting in Guru Nanak Niwas on February 15 issued the show-cause.Earlier, addressing the kirtan darbar, he confined his speech to the Sikh ideology. In a passing reference and without naming anybody, he, however, said certain "anti-Sikh forces" were ``lowering the Sikh ideology.''Those present in the congregation included officials of the SGPC and the Golden Temple.
