Beant case: SP, CM Security, testifies

CHANDIGARH, March 1: Evidence in the Beant Singh assassination case resumed today in the court of UT District and Sessions Judge B. S. Bedi, with Gurdeep Singh, SP, CM Security, deposing that he was posted at the CM's residence and was the overall in charge of security. He said that three more SPs, including D. K Tripathi and C. M. Bakshi, were also on duty. Ved Pal was the in charge of the Motor Transport section.On August 31, 1995, the anti-sabotage team checked the vehicles at the CM's residence and then handed them over to the ``santri'' at the gate, Gurdeep Singh stated. The witness added that the advance party reached the Secretariat before the CM. While the CM reached at 1.20 p. m., the advance party reached at about 11.30 p. m. Gurdeep Singh got up from his office at about 5.05 p. m. to come down when he came to know that Beant Singh was planning to leave. At that very moment, he heard the blast. When he came down, the CM's car was ablaze and smoke was coming out of it, he stated. Gurdeep Singh added that Jagdish Singh, the CM's driver, was taken out of the car with the help of some people and that after staying at the spot for some time, he left for his residence.
