Haryana to give annual allowance to Ashok Chakra winners

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PANCHKULA, MARCH 1: The Haryana government has introduced an annual allowance for winners of the Ashok Chakra series of gallantry awards, Sena Medal and Mention-in-Despatches.

Secretary of the Rajya Sainik Board Brig Satya Dev (retd) said that the allowance has been granted with effect from January 1, 1999. Official notification for the same has been issued.

As per the policy, winners of the Ashok Chakra will get an annuity of Rs 2,400. Kirti Chakra awardees will get Rs 900, while Shaurya Chakra awardees will receive Rs 600 per annum.

The annuity for Sena Medal and its equivalents in the Navy and the Air Force will be Rs 600, while the entitlement for Mention-in-Despatches will be Rs 300.

Only those personnel possessing domicile of Haryana state at the time of joining the Army or at the time of receiving the award are eligible for the annuity. The annuity will be applicable till the lifetime of the awardee or the lifetime of his widow if the decoration is awarded posthumously.

A Bar to any of the above mentioned medals would entitle the awardee for additional benefits as applicable to other gallantry awards.

Recipients of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC) series are already being paid an annuity by the state government. The pension to PVC and Victoria Cross winners in the state was also revised some time back from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 per month.

Annuity for the Sarvotam Yudh Sewa Medal (Rs 2,300), Uttam Yudh Sewa Medal (Rs 2,100) and Yudh Sewa Medal (1,900) was introduced by the state government about a year and a half ago.

Meanwhile, the Rajya Sainik Board has, from this year, also started coaching classes for entrance to professional courses and Sainik Schools at a nominal fee.
