No-trust motion
PATIALA: The no-confidence motion against Banur Municipal Council president Jagjit Singh Sandhu has been postponed. The motion was postponed at the instance of the Deputy Commissioner, sources revealed. Ten members out of 13 had moved the no-confidence motion against the president on February 1.

KHARAR: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has promoted 21 Judicial officers in the state and posted them as Additional District and Sessions Judge at different headquarters. T.R. Bansal has been posted as Additional District and Sessions Judge at Roopnagar, Amarjit Singh Katari at Amritsar, R.P. Nagrath at Bathinda, B.C. Gupta at Hoshiarpur, S.P. Bangar at Kapurthala, Varinder Singh at Patiala, Varinder Kumar at Hoshiapur, H.P.S. Mahal at Sangrur, G.S. Saran at Ludhiana, Gopal Krishan at Ferozpur, Gurmit Ram at Gurdaspur, Rekhi Mittal at Jalandhar, Inderjit Kaushik at Sangrur, Bhupinder Singh at Ferozepur, R.S. Khula Darbar organised
PATIALA: Over 20 complaints were received at a khula darbar organised by the Patiala district administration for on the spot redressal of public complaints, here today. Deputy Commissioner Jasbir Singh Bir, who presided over the ``khula darbar'' held in his office, said it was organised in pursuance of the state government's instructions for speedy redressal of public grievances at the distict headquarters to ensure that they did not have to come to Chandigarh for trivial matters.

Vajra Corps Raising Day
JALANDHAR: The Vajra Corps celebrated its 49th Raising Day here today. The Corps derives its name from Lord Indra's powerful thunderbolt, Vajra, a symbol of sacrifice of a great sage, Dadhichi, who voluntarily sacrificed his body to make the fierce weapon from his thigh bone. The Vajra Corps was raised on March 1, 1950 at Ambala under the leadership of Lt Gen Kulwant Singh. Later, the Corps was commanded by distinguished generals like Lt Gen S.P. Thorat, Gen Shankar Roy Choudhary who become the Army chief, Gen V.P. Malik, the present Chief of Army Staff, and Lt Gen H.B. Kala, GoC-in-C, Western Command.

Loudspeakers banned
KHARAR: In view of the ensuing annual examinations of school and college students, the Roopnagar District Magistrate has imposed a ban on the use of loudspeakers in the entire district from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The orders state that the permission to use loudspeakers could be attained from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of the respective areas. The orders will remain in force till April 30.

Honour for PU teacher
PATIALA: Dr Dharam Pal Singhal, chairman Guru Ravi Dass chair, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was honoured here yesterday during a special function organised at Bhasha Bhawan by a group of educationists in cooperation with languages department. Amrit Lal Paul, Editor of the Abhinandan Granth, said that Dr Singhal was honoured for his valuable contributions to Punjabi literature. A shawl and Rs 11,000 were presented to Dr Singhal on the occasion.

Eye camp
PATIALA: As many as 811 patients were examined and 57 cataract operations were performed during a free eye check-up and operation camp organised by Netar Sewa Society, Punjab, yesterday at Mahavir Dal hospital, Maur Mandi, Bathinda. Satinder Singh Cheema, president of the society said the patients were examined by a team of eye specialists, led by Dr G. S. Randhawa. He said that free medicines were also provided to the patients by the society.

Refresher course
PATIALA: A 22-day UGC refresher course in Criminology and Forensic Science, being conducted in the department of forensic science, was inaugurated here on Monday by Pro Vice Chancellor of Punjabi University Dr R. M. Goel. The function was presided over by Dr B. S. Bhatia, Dean, academic affairs .
