Kannan moves ahead

Chennai, March 1: Top seed and Davis Cup reserve Vijay Kannan of Delhi displayed steely nerves to dispose off a fighting Shailesh Dhoble of Maharashtra 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(7-4) to move into the second round of the Gold Flake Aces Tour men's tennis championship second leg here today.

In the other men's singles first round matches, fourth seed Nitin Kirtane, eighth seed Vijendra Laad (both Maharashtra), fifth seed Saurav Panja (Bengal), seventh seed Vasudeva Reddy (Andhra Pradesh), Jagdish Tanwar (Rajasthan) and local star Manoj Mahadevan won.

VN Prem Prakash, CV Anand, P Vishal, R Narendran, Manoj Kumar, Meenkashi Sundaram, KG Ramesh and Md Ayser Arafat were the qualifiers.

Results Men's singles (1st round): Jagdish Tanwar (Raj) bt Rohan Bopanna (Kar) 6-0, 7-5; Manoj Mahadevan (TN) bt Anup Minda (Mah) 6-2, 6-2; Vasudeva Reddy (AP) bt Rishi Sridhar (TN) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4; Saurav Panja (Ben) bt Rajkumar Gopalan (TN) 2-6, 6-3, 6-3; Vijendra Laad (Mah) bt Udayakumar Reddy (TN) 6-2, 6-3; Nitin Kirtane (Mah) bt AvinashArun (TN) 6-3, 6-3; Vijay Kannan (Delhi) bt Shailesh Dhoble (Mah) 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(7-4).
