NEW DELHI, March 3: The Delhi Vidyut Board's campaign to check power theft turned violent when the slumdwellers of Gyaspur camp near the Nizamuddin bridge resorted to throwing stones. The Nizamuddin police have registered a case against two slumdwellers, including one woman, for using criminal force to deter public servants from discharge of duty. Some of the slumdwellers say that the Central Industrial Security Force that was assisting the DVB had attacked the women and children. ``As a result of the lathi charge, about six persons including an eight-year-old girl and three women have got injured,'' they say.
They say eight-year-old Sujata has received nine stitches and two women have been admitted to the Safdarjang Hospital.
According to the investigating officer, it was the residents who first threw stones at the DVB officials and the CISF team. ``Four CISF officers were also injured. They have been admitted to the Safdarjang Hospital,'' he said. Asked about the injuries received by the slumdwellers, he said: ``Officers had to protect themselves from the mob. In that sudden reaction someone might have got injured.'' The 2,000-odd residents of the Gyaspur camp have been using power illegally for the last 20 years.
