Access delayed for new CM on http:/www.maharashtra. gov.in

Shashank Mhasawade
MUMBAI, March 3: If Chief Minister Narayan Rane's promise to infuse a new urgency in the state's administration has had any desired effect it's not visible at government's official website - http://WWW.maharashtra.gov.in.

More than a month after Rane took over from Manohar Joshi, the website does not have an announcement to this effect. The last newsletter on government activities is three months old and a message ``Honourable chief minister shri Narayan Rane's message coming soon'' has been posted on the website for as long as anyone remembers.

And that's not all. The site does not offer any information on government's stand on the Rent Act - a volatile issue that cost the Sena-BJP a few seats in the Lok Sabha elections. There is no mention on Union Government's clearance to the multi-crore Worli-Bandra sea link that is otherwise being bandied about as a major achievement for the government. Nor is there any information available on the forthcoming budget session of the state legislature, which starts onMarch 15, 1999.

Most of the concerned government officials are either ignorant of the fact that the site hasn't been updated for a long time, or think it's not their responsibility. The website is jointly maintained by the Industries Department and Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR). When contacted, Joint Commissioner (Industries) S S Kulkarni passed the buck to the DIPR. ``We maintain the website so far as the industrial policy of the state is concerned. Aspects like CM's message and newsletters are the responsibilities of DIPR. We, in fact, had written a letter to DIPR requesting them to update the site, but nothing came of it,'' Kulkarni said.

Anand Limaye, Director General, DIPR, was not even aware of the things missing from the website. Limaye was quite surprised to know that the CM's message was not on the website. ``It is unfortunate that such delay has taken place about updating the site. I will see to it that things move as fast as possible,'' Limaye said. Things did move fastafter this. Pralhad Jadhav, deputy director (exhibitions) of DIPR, who is responsible for updating the site, called on Wednesday evening to say the draft of CM's message was ready and the site would be updated in a couple of days. But he did not speak anything about other things missing from the website. May be, those are some other department's responsibility.
