Shiv Sena demands President's Rule in Tripura

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
AGARTALA, MAR 3: Tripura Shiv Sena unit has demanded President's Rule in the State, alleging that its situation, with regard to killings, abductions and extortions, was ``worse'' than in Bihar.

The Left Front Government has failed to protect the lives and property of the 30 lakh population in the State, and the Governor has also not discharged his constitutional duty of apprising the Centre of the ``deteriorating'' law and order situation, said the unit chief K K Bhattacharjee, in a letter to Union Home Minister L K Advani.

``Development works in Tripura have come to a complete standstill, schools and markets, especially in the interior areas have been closed, movement from one place to another has become very restricted and even transportation of essential commodities and small time trading has been almost stopped,'' he alleged in the letter which was released to the press today.

He said that during the last five years, about 1700 people were killed, 130 army and paramilitary forces died in encounterswith insurgents, while over 1300 innocent people were abducted and among them about 100 were killed by insurgents operating in the State, as their relatives failed to pay the ransoms demanded of them.

Moreover, about 130 people were missing, over 1070 people released after paying ransoms to abductors and thousands of houses were destroyed in arson attacks by militants across the State, he added.

Bhattacharjee said that the employees in the interior had been facing constant threats by militants for monthly payment.

He alleged that the State Government had struck a deal with militant outfits to rig the ensuing panchayat elections.
