Bengal retain title

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, March 3: Defending champions Bengal retained the Justice Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy for the 21st Sub-junior (under-16) National football championship when they beat a spirited Tamil Nadu 1-0 in the final held at Ambedkar Stadium here today. The teams were locked goalless at the breather.

Bengal thus won the title for the seventh time in 10 appearnaces in the final. Bengal boys dominated the proceedings from the initial stages but could not create any opening. Bengal striker Syed Raheem Nabi was the main culprit when he squandered three sitters and deprived his team of getting an early lead. In the 33rd minute, Bengal's right-winger Supratik Ain shot straight into Tamil Nadu's custodian V. P. Satish Kumar and on getting a rebound volleyed over the bar.

On changing ends, Bengal continued to exert pressure and mid-fielder Sona Biswas' left-footed shot was well saved by goalkeeper V. P. Satish Kumar. In the 63rd minute, substitute mid-fielder Sobhan sent a long through pass to right winger Supratik Ain who trapped and scored with a first-time angular rising shot. In the 74th minute, Bengal striker Syed Rahim Nabi again got a golden goal-scoring chance from close but shot over a left flank cross by Supratik Ain. Tamil Nadu's forwards tried their best to get an equaliser but could not penetrate the tight Bengal defence.

Bengal's coach Ananto Ghosh, who was also the coach of last year's victorious squad, felt that his players did not attack enough from the flanks to open up the packed defence of Tamil Nadu.

Ajit Sood, Chairman and Managing Director of Mayar Group of Companies, distributed the prizes.
