NEW DELHI, March 3: DAV Jalandhar won the seventh Nehry-SAIL Champion Colleges hockey tournament beating GGD SD College, Chandigarh 3-0 in the final played at Amritsar, according to reports reaching here. All the goals came in the initial half.Jugandeep Singh (2) and Harminder Singh scored for the winners. Jugandeep drew first blood in the fourth minute and followed it up by another goal in the 11th minute. Harminder Singh completed the tally in the 20th minute.
Earlier, Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi) put it across Government Mao College (Lahore) 2-1 to earn the thrd spot. The winners led 1-0 at half-time. Prabhjot Singh converted a penalty stroke awarded to the team in the very first minute to put the Delhi college ahead. Gaurav R increased the lead in the 53rd minute. Atif Mushtaq reduced the margin for the Pakistan team in the 64th minute, converting a penalty corner.
Six talented players were awarded cash prize of Rs 2,500 each. They are: Inderjit Singh (GGDSD, Chandigarh), Sharanjit Singh (DAV, Jalandhar), Jaswinder Singh (GGDSD, Chandigarh), navdeep Singh (GGDSD, Chandigarh), Ajitpal Singh (DAV, Jalandhar) and Rohan Butt (Government Mao College, Lahore).
The Lahore college team was given a special cash award of Rs 25,000 (SAIL's contribution being Rs 15,000 and Guru Nanak Dev University's share was Rs 10,000).
The following teams received SAIL cash awards: Winners: DAV College, Jalandhar (Rs 1 lakh); Runners-up: GGDSD College, Chandigarh (Rs 60,000); Third position: Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi (Rs 40,000); Coach of the winning team: Kirpal Singh of DAV College, Jalandhar (Rs 5,000).
The prize for best conversion of penalty corners (Rs 8,000) went to DAV College, Jalandhar.
