PUNE, March 3: A total of 18 goals were witnessed in the encounters of the all India Food Corporation of India (FCI) inter zonal hockey tournament being played at the PCMC Poligras stadium today.East Zone routed South Zone 6-0 while North Zone meted the same treatment to NEF Zone defeating them 7-0. Hosts West Zone suffered their second consecutive defeat, losing to Headquarters 0-5.
For East Zone Gurucharan Singh (10th), Ranjan Lakra (31st), Gurmeet Singh (33rd), J Surin (57th), Jugal Kishore (62nd) and Sudhir Minz (65th minute) were the goal scorers. The team received a total of eight penalty corners of which only one was converted by Gurmeet. The losers had two penalty corners coming their way, of which none materialised.
North Zone had a similar game at hand against North East Frontier Zone. However, they were held at bay till the breather before they could bring about the deluge of goals in the latter's session. Of eleven penalty corners they converted two, off Sanjit Kumar and Virendra Singh.
West Zone suffered the worst defeat so far in the tournament, losing by a 5-0 margin at the hands of Headquarters. The winners led 1-0 at half time. In the post breather session Headquarters took complete control scoring four goals at regular intervals.
West Zone's dismal performance includes their failure to score none of the six penalty corners received. The winners too were unable to convert any of the three received. After the end of the third day East Zone lead the table with eight points while North Zone and Headquarters are tied at second spot with six points each.
