NEW DELHI, March 7: The second day of the Coca-Cola New Delhi YMCA International Boxing Championships witnessed some interesting bouts with three Indian seniors and four juniors making the finals but it was Leki from Bhutan who stole the thunder to send a sound warning to his opponent at the Jaisingh Road rings here today. The Bhutanese, with an excellent left-right combination, pinned W.R. Pradeep of Sri Lanka to the ropes for most time in the first. But it was the powerful right uppercut in the second that sent the Lankan staggering to the canvas as the Bhutanese registered the only knockout so far in the championships. The Lankan barely managed to stand up but the referee counted him out in the light weight bout.
The other bout that generated enormous interest was the one between Dorji, another Bhutanese, and Sri Lankan W.P. Mendis. Mendis, a southpaw, was all over against a backpedalling Bhutanese in the first round. One straight left sent Dorji to the ropes and he was subjected to a standing count. There was no respite for the Bhutanese in the second even as the Lankan received a warning. Dorji received a cut on his left eyebrow and a minor one on his right cheek in the second. And once the doctor cleared him, he boxed like one possessed to pick some valuable points.
And as the bell rang for the third round, Dorji sent some aggressive blows to the Sri Lankan, who was seemingly tiring. One right hook saw the Lankan go on the backfoot and it was the turn of the Lankan to take the standing count. Leading 15-12, the Lankan received a second warning and even before the referee could ask him to continue boxing, the Lankan threw in the towel.
Among the Indians, S. Suresh outboxed Malaysian Sapok A.K. Biki, a Commonwealth gold medallist, to win the bout 11-7 in the light fly category. The aggressive approach of the Indian was too hot for the Malaysian to handle. The Malaysian was recuperating from an injury he suffered during his gold-winning performance and was fighting after a lay-off since September. Narenra Rana and K. Niteya Singh had little difficulty in putting across their opponents in light and welter categories.
Earlier, in the junior category, Santosh Thakur scored an RSC (outclassed) when the referee stopped contest against Lankan Laantha Kumara in the second round. The other Indians, Amardeep Gurung and Manoj Shah in the sub-junior category, made a mocokery of their opponents while Praveen Kumar downed Kravcllenko Oleksandar of Ukraine on a 18-15 verdict.
