Act of will -- Kusumagraj signs off with a flourish

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NASHIK, MARCH 12: That a writer whose works reflected his social concerns should will his possessions away to charitable organisations and needy students would come as no surprise to admirers of Kusumagraj, renowned Marathi poet and playwright who passed away on Wednesday.

A widower, Kusumagraj lived in a house provided by the State Government which also functioned as an office for the Kusumagraj Pratisthan. According to the will, the Jnanpith laureate has left Rs 1.60 lakh in cash and fixed deposits of Rs 50,000, to be divided equally among his family (two brothers Keshav and Manohar, and a sister Kusum); charitable organisations (Kusumagraj Pratisthan, Lokhitwadi Mandal, Ramabai Ambedkar School, Shirwade Library, and Anandvan, Varora); and needy students.

The will – dated February 20, 1994, when the writer was recovering from surgery – is to be executed by a committee comprising Devkisan Sarda (chairperson), Hemant Takale (vice-chairperson), Dilip Salvekar (secretary), Ramkrishna Naik, ShivajiraoPatil, Keshav Shirwadkar and Professor Vasantrao Patil.

The executors of the will have been instructed to convert the living room of his house into a `study room' for poor students and leave the remaining two rooms for use by the Kusumagraj Pratisthan.

The will also bequeaths utensils and household articles to the author's relatives and the furniture to his literary friends. Amounts ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 have been set aside for the sweeper and other servants.

According to the will, the copyright of all his books will remain with their respective publishers. It suggests that an editorial board comprising Balasaheb Saraf, Rekha Bhandre and Professor Vasantrao Patil be responsible for compiling and editing unpublished material. All mementoes and trophies will remain with the Pratisthan.
