Double for Megh Varun

CHANDIGARH, MARCH 12: Megh Varun Pant bagged two gold medals in the field events in the boys section on the opening day of the 52nd annual athletic meet of the Punjab Engineering College, which began here at the PEC athletic stadium.

Megh Varun first gold of the day came in the shot put event. He also stamped his authority in the discus throw event to claim the second gold of the day.Rupinderdeep Kaur pocketed the gold medal in the women's discus throw event while Rubel Goel was victorious in the high jump event.

The 5,000 metres gold in the boys section went to Maninder Singh. Arun Sharma and Amit Batra were second and third, respectively.

Results: Men: 5,000m: 1 Maninder Singh, 2 Arun Sharma, 3 Amit Batra. Shot put: 1 Megh Varun Pant, 2 Yadvinder Singh, 3 Hitesh Bhalla. High jump: 1 Amit Vij, 2 Kartikey Mishra, 3 Kamlender. 4800m cycle race: 1 Navpreet Singh, 2 GurIqbal Singh, 3 Joy Preet. Long jump: 1 Kartikey Mishra, 2 Tarun Joshi, 3 AS Sidhu. 1000m cycle race: 1 Maninder Singh, 2 Navpreet Singh, 3 Nitin Sharma. Discus throw: 1 Megh Varun Pant, 2 Pradeep Bamal, 3 Amit Vij 800m: 1 AS Sidhu, 2 Maninder Singh, 3 Manpreet Singh. Girls: Shot put: 1 Rupinderdeep Kaur, 2 Amandeep Kaur, 3 Loveleen. High jump: 1 Rubel Goel, 2 Puja, 3 Prakeerti. Slow cycle race: 1 A Seedhar, 2 Puja, 3 Prakeerti.

Oarsmen honoured
The Chandigarh Rowing Association (CRA), held a function to honour oarsmen, who represented Chandigarh contingent in the fifth National Games held at Imphal, in the evening today at the Lake Club. The rowing men's and women's team bagged 15 medals including seven gold, four silver and four bronze, which swelled the Chandigarh's overall medal tally in the Games. Chandigarh won 27 medal in all. Rajeev Sharma, team coach was also honoured on the occasion.

Rajan Kashyap, president, Chandigarh Olympic Association was the chief guest on the occasion.

In the near future, the CRA is also planning to rope in junior players to build a strong base and maintain their medal standing at the national level.

However, the next National Games are being organised by the Punjab Olympic Association, and Sukhna Lake would be the venue for water sports, which would give added advantage to the Chandigarh team.

Wrestling meet
The Ropar District wrestling meet will be held at Nehru Stadium, Ropar, on March 20 and 21. According to a press release, the meet will be held in senior and junior categories.
