P&G cuts prices

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU
MUMBAI, MAR 13: Procter & Gamble India (P&G) brought about a reduction in the maximum retail price (MRP) of its premium detergent brand Ariel Hi-Power Compact following the budget announcement of reducing excise duty on detergents to 16 per cent from 18 per cent.

P&G has reduced the price of the detergent from the pre-budget levels of Rs 72 for a 500 gm bag to Rs 71. The MRP on a one kilo bag of the brand has been brought down to Rs 123.50 from Rs 125.

The move follows the reduction in prices of detergents effected by Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) last week following the reduction in excise duty.

HLL had reduced prices in the range of paise 25 to Rs 2 on pack size exceeding 200 gm. HLL's detergent brands includes the premium brand International Surf Excel. The excise duty on soaps and detergents was brought down to 16 per cent from 18 per cent in the Union budget for 1999-2000.
