Chennai, MARCH 13: The Centre was considering amendments to the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, to plug the legal loopholes and make it more effective, said Union Secretary to the Department of Consumer Affairs K Srinivasan today.Addressing mediapersons after inaugurating the Consumer Information Centre (second in India and first in TN) sponsored by the Department of Consumer Affairs to be run by the SMN Consumer Protection Council, he said that he had held consultations with consumer activists and groups regarding the pendency of cases (there were 6,000 cases pending with the National Consumer Forum) and protection to the consumer. About 40 recommendations had been made which were under discussion, he said. The amendments will be brought about after the Cabinet met next month.
TN Food and Cooperatives Secretary M Ramu said that all the judges vacancies in consumer courts in the districts had been filled up, barring one. Efforts were on to set up five centres in different parts of the country, he said.Ramu appealed to the Centre to set up another information centre in Madurai. The Consumer Information Centre will contain all information required.
