Mankar-Ghildayal champs

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, MARCH 13: Prakash Mankar and Bijinder Mohan Ghildayal (Director SCI) won the Pratt & Whitney Aviation golf tournament at the par-70 Bombay Presidency Golf Club, Chembur today. Mankar, a chartered accountant by profession, and Ghildayal garnered 46 points to win the pairs stableford event over 18 holes and pocket return tickets to London from Mumbai, courtesy Air-India.

The duo of A Ravi and Rajesh Tomar finished a close second with 44 points.Scoring was on a stableford basis with the better ball score on each hole counting for the tally. Players were, however, given the option to play their shots a second time if they wished to go on the holes of their choice with the number of shots being determined on the basis of 30 per cent of the player's handicap. To offset this advantage, players played to 70 per cent of their handicap. ``The format is exciting. I utilised three of my five shots,'' said Ghildayal, whose views were echoed by Mankar.

But not all were helped by the chance to replay the `dreamshot'. ``I replayed my shots twice and both the times ended with double-bogeys,'' noted local favourite Shivas Nath who, nevertheless, picked up a special prize for hitting closest to the pin.

The highlight of the day was a hole-in-one on the 150 yard 10th by M&M's Vinay Upadhayay whose 3-iron shot landed four feet from the pin, hit the stick and rolled about five feet before the backspin saw it roll back into the cup.

Individual winners: Men: Sharad Divecha (41 points), Women: Rani Maheshwari (29); Longest Drive KJ Singh (260 yards).
