WB slaps Rs 94 cr tax in budget

CALCUTTA, Mar 19: West Bengal finance minister Asim Dasgupta on Friday placed in the state assembly a "limited-deficit" budget for 1999-2000, with tax proposals expected to generate Rs 94-crore additional resources leaving a Rs 16-crore deficit. The total budget outlay has been pegged at Rs 23,034 crore.The plan outlays for the year have been increased 27 per cent to Rs 6289 crore from Rs 4950 crore in 1998-99. The major beneficiary will be the power sector whose plan outlay will go up from Rs 1577 crore to Rs 2011 crore. He proposed the introduction of a first-point tax and abolition of the multiple-point tax system "in the interest of industry and trade".
