Ranjit Singh forms panel for a parallel Khalsa fete

AMRITSAR, MARCH 19: Suspended Jathedar of Akal Takht Ranjit Singh today launched a major offensive against the SGPC, announcing formation of a 34-member committee for holding parallel celebrations of the tercentenary of Sikh Panth next month.

The suspended jathedar, in a written statement on the letter-head of Akal Takht, said that he was forming the `Khalsa Panth tercentenary celebrations committee' under the powers vested in him by Sikhs from all over the world.The committee consists of leaders of the Sant Samaj, religious persons, Sikh saints and others, he said.

The suspended jathedar also set up a seven-member press and propaganda committee to look after publicity of the programmes of the tercentenary being held at Anandpur Sahib on April 13 and 14 under the aegis of `Akal Takht'.

Both these committees would continue to work for over one year till the Baishaki of 2000, he said.

The suspended jathedar yesterday floated a three-member financial committee to explore avenues for collecting funds forthe parallel celebrations.The important members of the committee include the head of Damdami Taksal, Baba Thakar Singh and head of the Baba Bidhi Chan institution, Baba Daya Singh.
