Panel to probe serial's `adverse' effect on kids

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, MARCH 19: The Delhi High Court today appointed a three-member committee under former Himachal Pradesh High Court chief justice Leila Seth to enquire into the alleged "adverse" effect of popular serial Shaktimaan on children.

Justice M K Sharma, who ordered the appointment of the committee, said National Commission for Women chairperson Vibha Parthasarathy and journalist Dilip Padgaonkar will be the other members of the committee.

The appointment of the committee was ordered following a petition by Bheesham International, a company owned by Mukesh Khanna, producer, director and lead actor in the serial, challenging Doordarshan (DD)'s notification issued in January for Shaktimaan's termination.

DD, in its reply to Khanna's plea, had submitted that the termination notice was issued as several reports about the "ill effect" of the serial on children had appeared in the media and about 30 complaints were received in this regard. Asking the committee to submit its report within four weeks, thecourt said till then, DD would continue to telecast the serial in a "restrained" form.

According to the complaints that DD annexed to the affidavit, children tried to imitate Shaktimaan, who is shown to have supernatural powers.

The court said since DD had neither carried out an independent survey on the reported adverse effect of the serial, nor sought expert opinion in this regard, an independent assessment had become necessary.
