BJP member is UMC panel chief

Pammi Kumar Rajnani of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was selected for the chairmanship of standing committee of Ulhasnagar Municipal Council (UMC) after elections were held amid revolt by BJP members for eight seats today. BJP members defied party whip resulting in the defeat of their party candidate Narendra Rajani for the 16-member panel.

In today's elections following candidates made it to the panel: Rajan Chaudhari and Bhagwan Bhandari of Shiv Sena; Ram Parwani of BJP; Jyoti Kalani and Kishore Wanwari of UPP; Thakur Behrani and Kanta Gajwani of Congress and Independent candidate Narayan Punjabi. While the break-up of the existing members is as follows: Pammi Kumar Achnani and Bhagwati Rupchandani of BJP; Naresh Yadav (RPI); Sunita Rajwani, Bhimsen More, Laxmi Sasane (Shiv Sena) and Laxmi Lund and Prabhunath Gupta of UPP.

Shakeel gangster shot dead

A member of the Chhota Shakeel gang was gunned down in a police encounter at Worli late on Thursday night. Ona tip-off police laid a trap at Golibar Naka. Gangster Nassir Hussein and an associate arrived on a motor cycle. When the police ordered them to surrender, the gangster allegedly began shooting in the direction of the police, who retaliated fatally injuring Hussain. His accomplice managed to escape.
