Drug therapy will be out of reach

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, MARCH 19: Prices of everything have gone up with the development of drugs and much of drug therapy will be out of reach of the common man. Because of this inequity in health care, there is a rapid erosion in public health which in turn causes social disorders.

This was stated by Sandeep Basu, who delivered the keynote address on ``Impact of Bio-Research in Medicine'' at the sixth symposium on New Biology, which began at Panjab University today.

Basu pointed out that the cost of treatment of inter-drug resistant tuberculosis is around $ 2.5 lakh. ``Getting it means a death sentence'' he said and added that financial disparity between the developing and developed countries had led to ``a priority gap.'' Earlier, the symposium was inaugurated by PU Vice-Chancellor M. M. Puri. I. B. S. Passi and R. C. Sobti also spoke on the occasion.
