Fifty down with food poisoning in east Delhi

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, MARCH 19: Over 50 people were taken ill after they ate snacks made from kuttu ka atta in east Delhi today. This variety of atta, derived from lotus seeds, is had during Navratri celebrations. While 40 were hospitalised, the rest have been discharged.

Most of the victims had eaten the snacks last night and this morning. Within a couple of hours, they felt giddy and nauseous. Almost all the victims are from middle-class families living in Nathu Colony, New Seemapuri and Yamuna Vihar. GTB doctors refused to speculate on whether the atta was adulterated. They said all the victims were out of danger. Delhi Health Minister A.K. Walia, who visited the hospital, said an inquiry has been ordered.
