No bandh please, ECF tells leaders

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, March 19: The Express Citizens' Forum today called upon the enlightened citizen leadership of the current movement for reinstatement of Arun Bhatia as Pune municipal commissioner to desist from a bandh call ``as it would only cause inconvenience to citizens themselves''.

In a statement, the forum pointed out that the middle class generally opposes a bandh call given by the working class for better wages because of the inconvenience this form of protest causes to the citizenry. ``Resorting to bandh, therefore, should be taboo for a movement waged by the middle class itself''.

Describing the present week-long movement by citizens as ``historic'' and unparalleled, the forum said it would cross the safety limit if it was allowed to stray into a bandh under the growing influence of politicians. Besides causing hardships to citizens at large and young students appearing for the tenth and the twelfth standard examinations in particular, the bandh might be misused by anti-social elements to malign the movement that has been run impeccably during the past one week.
