Maharashtra will resist any CEC move for early polls, asserts Munde
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, MARCH 19: Maharashtra Deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde today said that both alliance partners would do its best to convince the Central Election Commission against advancing the date of state Assembly polls.Speaking on the first anniversary fete of the BJP coalition rule at the Centre, Munde said that all efforts were being taken to ensure that polls were not held three months ahead of schedule in December. He informed that he had sought an appointment with CEC M S Gill and Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee to present their case.``We are not asking for a single day's extra tenure but we do not want the election in December either when the present Assembly has a term till March.'' Top echelons in both the BJP as well as the Sena are of the view that the partners in recently refurbished alliance government headed by Narayan Rane were better coordinated and required adequate time to prove itself polls in February next year would give the Rane government nearly 10 to 11 months of breathingtime in office before the Code of Conduct curbs are enforced.February, they argue, will also be ideal on account of better weather conditions in Vidarbha and parts of north Maharashtra which experience bitter winters; also it finish before the busy examination season in the State that goes through March and April every year.
