CHANDIGARH, MARCH 25: Two doctors of the PGI, Dr S.Majumdar, Head Department of Experimental Medicine and Biotechnology and Dr S.Suri, Head of Radiodiagnosis have been selected for Dr B.C.Roy National Award this year.Dr S.Majumdar has been selected in the category of "Oration" for his contribution to medical research on pulmonary surfactant apoprotein in foetal lung maturity. Dr Suri has been selected in the category of "Recognition of the best talents in encouraging the development of specialities in different branches of medicine."
While talking to Newsline Dr Majumdar said:" We have developed a new surfactant which can be identified by the body cells. The cells retain the surfactant which would have been otherwise wasted but instead it is resynthesised and used again. This development can enable indigenous production of surfactant and that too at very reasonable prices." Dr Majumdar said that efforts are on to get a patent for the new development.
Dr Suri has been selected for the award for her contribution in the field of radiodiagnosis and the development of interventional radiology at PGI. Talking to Newsline Dr Suri said:" My area of work has been in interventional radiology with the help of which you can place biopsy needles and drainage catheters anywhere in the body under the guidance of imaging techniques so that even small tumours can be biopsied. I have also worked for the modernisation of our department and can proudly say that PGI is as advanced as any other hospital when it comes to diagnosis."
