Dingko 'scales' new peak, is disqualified

TRS Trivikram
VISAKHAPATNAM, March 25: Dingko Singh is disqualified. It came as a rude shock to boxing lovers in the city. He was found to be 300 grams overweight in the 54 kg bantam weight category and was disqualified to defend his title in the 45th Senior National boxing championship here today.

Coaches and the manager of Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) were tightlipped. ``Dingko was sent back to the base (Naval base where the team is staying) and there is no way you can contact him,'' one coach offered on condition of anonymity.

At the base, none was ready to say where Dingko could be found.

NS Rawat, IABF observer said: ``Dingko has no chance of contesting in a higher category, i.e. feather weight, as National Games champion and overwhelming favourite Ramanand will be competing.''

The weighing-in was held in the morning, but the news was withheld by organisers till late in the evening. As Dingko was not scheduled to fight today nobody suspected the disqualification. In fact, Dingko lit the torch duringthe opening ceremony.
