Rajesh Rawat, Akbar Ali pull surprises

Meerut, March 25: Lucknow's Rajesh Rawat (overshadowing current leader Vijay Kumar) and old warhorse Calcutta's Akbar Ali pulled surprises with five under 67 to emerge leaders on the opening day of the Rs. 5 lakh AGC-Wills Meerut Open Golf Tournament at the Army golf course.

Trailing the leaders were Gaurav Ghei, Uttam Singh Mundy and Amritinder Singh with a card of four under 68.

Overshadowed by Rawat, current leader in the Order of Merit Vijay Kumar recovering from a stiff back slipped to a lower spot with a card of 2 under par 70 to share the crowded space with Jyoti Randhawa, Asgar Ali, Binod Pandey, Mohd Maqbool, Vivek Bhandari, albir Verma.

With as many as 19 professionals scoring under par cards on a given single day, the course record on the Indian circuit has been broken by the Meerut Army golf course.
