Vikram Rathour takes Roshanara into semis

NEW DELHI, MARCH 25: Former India opener Vikram Rathour (85: 14x4, 1x6, 50b) powered hosts Roshanara Club into the semi-final of the third Roshanara Pepsi Cup after his team beat the strong Indian Airlines by seven wickets with 12.5 overs to spare at the Roshanara ground here today.

At the end of the league engagements in the four-team pool B, Airlines, Roshanara and Chand Khanna finished with two wins and a loss each. Roshanara edged out Chand Khanna on better batting average, having won both their last games with plenty of overs to spare.

Shafiq Khan top-scored with 72 (4x4) and added 80 for the fifth wicket with Fazil Khaleel (36) as Airlines reached 252 for nine in the stipulated 45 overs. Virender Sehwag (35) and left-arm spinner Sukhwinder Singh (31 not out, batting at No. 9) were the other principal contributors.

Left-arm medium pacer Amit Suman finished with three for 39 from eight overs. His victims included Karnataka opener J Arun Kumar (0), Vijay Dahiya (27) and Ashok Singh (10).

Roshanara were given a flying start by Aashish Kapoor (35: 5x4, 25b) and Vikram Rathour who put on 91 in just eight overs. Later Rathour and Gagan Khoda added 89 in 7.3 overs for the second wicket as Roshanara reached 175 in 15 overs.

Yuvraj Singh and Dinesh Mongia gave the finishing touch by adding 73 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket. Dodda Ganesh gave away 59 ruins in his five overs while Sehwag was punished for 72 in nine.

In the first semi-final tomorrow, Airlines will take on Delhi Blues. Roshanara play Sonnet in the second semi-final on Saturday. The final is slated for Sunday.

Brief scores: Indian Airlines: 252 for 9 in 45 overs (Shafiq Khan 72, Fazal Khaleel 36, Virender Sehwag 35, Sukhwinder Singh 31, Vijay Dahiya 27, Amit Suman 3 for 39, Navdeep Singh 2 for 33).

Roshanara Club: 254 for 3 in 27.1 overs (Vikram Rathour 85, Gagan Khoda 47, Dinesh Mongia 40 not out, Aashish Kapoor 35, Yuvraj Singh 27 not out).
