CHANDIGARH, March 26: Bad news for those driving vehicles under the influence of liquor! The Chandigarh police will soon start a drive against drunken driving with a newly atcquired instrument to determine alcohol level. The instrument called Alcometer Breath Analyzer, comes with a printer facility.A press statement issued by the police said the local police had been conducting such tests with the help of balloon type breath analyser which did not have the printer facility. In case of any dispute, the police had no proof of such test. Also, it was not possible to determine the exact level of alcohol consumed by the driver.
Under Section 185 Motor Vehicle Act, whoever while driving or attempting to drive a motor vehicle has in his blood alcohol exceeding 30 mg per 100 ml of blood detected in a test by breath analyser, shall be punished for the first offence with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to Rs 2,000 or with both andfor a second or subsequent offence, if committed within three years, with imprisonment up to two years or with fine up to Rs 3,000 or with both.
