PUNE, March 26: The golden jubilee might be over, but the magic figure of `50' still continues to haunt the University of Pune. The university has failed in its attempt to achieve the revised target of raising Rs 50 lakh for the golden jubilee fund. The hype and hoopla generated during the golden jubilee year virtually saw an unceremonious end to the year long fanfare as a statement in the university senate meeting agenda today posted the total collected amount as little more than Rs 39 lakh.
The dismal show is more glaring due to the fact that the target for the golden jubilee fund was changed two times, when it was found to be more just ``unachievable.''
The target was put up at a whoppping Rs 200 crore, later cut down to just one per cent of the original projected target to Rs 2 crore and finally to mere Rs 50 lakh after present Vice-Chancellor Arun Nigavekar took over.
It was decided to raise funds by issuing golden jubilee receipts to students, institutions, industries, varsity alumni, philanthropists and businessmen. The total amount thus collected only fetched Rs 39,11,339, says the statement made by golden jubilee committee coordinator R S Mali in response to a question asked by a senate member Y G Shinde in the question-answer document of the agenda.
