AHMEDABAD, March 28: Narmada Development Minister Jaynarayan Vyas today said the work to raise the height of the Sardar Sarovar Dam by five metres on the Narmada river as granted by the Supreme Court, would be completed by April 10.Inauguration an exhibition on `Construction equipment and materials', organised by the Gujarat Institute of Civil Engineers and Architects here, the Minister said the construction was continuing on a war-footing and the people of the State would not tolerate any hurdles being created by the anti-SSP elements on the pretext of environment at foreign countries' behest.
Vyas said the SSP would help irrigate nearly 18 lakh hectares in the state and in a true sense it would prove to be the `lifeline' of Gujarat.
The Minister claimed that as per the Supreme Court guidelines, the State Government had rehabilitated all the project-affected people (PAPs) within three months. ``The Government has succeeded in getting a demurrage on the turbines imported from Japan and Rs 150 crore has been waived on it. The turbines will reach Gujarat by the third week of April'', claimed Vyas.
He said construction of the Sardar Sarovar canal to supply Narmada water had begun in the Kadi taluka.
Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited chairman Bhupendrasinh Chudasma was present.
