Army adopts stiff stance on use of uniform by pvt guards

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, March 28: Following directions from higher authorities, the Army is taking up the issue of private security guards with respective agencies and firms wearing military pattern uniforms and accessories.

According to an Army Headquarters Directive received here, it has been noticed that a large number of private security firms have come up which are issuing military pattern uniforms to their employees.

The directive, circulated to various Army Commands and Station Headquarters, specifies that such agencies be pinpointed and brought to the notice of higher authorities for follow-up action.

The directive, originating from the Adjutant General's branch, sources say, is based upon a Central government notification issued earlier, which restricts the use of military pattern uniforms and accessories by unauthorised persons.

The Military Police has already raised the issue with several city-based firms to remove military pattern items from their uniforms. Regimental cravats, lineyards, belts, caps and insignias are commonly being used by private security guards.

Though some of the security agencies have reportedly agreed to change over to non-military pattern accessories within a specified period, sources say that the firms will be visited again next month to check the progress.

Sources say that failure to comply could invite action as per the law. As per Sections 140 and 171 of the Indian Penal Code, wearing garb, logos or insignia similar to that used by security forces is forbidden and punishable under law with imprisonment or fine or both.
