Congress workers protest law and order situation

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, March 28: Hundreds of Congress workers protested against the deteriorating law and order situation in the Capital and sought the resignation of the Union Home Minister L.K. Advani.

The Congress workers, led by senior leaders of the party, held a massive demonstration at Jantar Mantar, burnt the effigy of Advani and more than 1,000 courted arrest. As announced, the party workers and leaders were heading towards Advani's residence to protest but were stopped on their way by the Parliament Street police. The march was led by AICC Delhi incharge Gulam Nabi Azad. Addressing the crowds, Azad said: ``If the Centre does not take steps to improve the law and order situation in the next one week, then we will launch an agitation at a bigger level next week.''

He also said that the incidents of crime in Delhi have made the people of the country lose faith in the BJP government.

Finally, pointing to the fact that law and order is not a subject under the Delhi government, he said: ``The Delhi Chief Minister cannot even get an official of the Delhi Police transferred.''``The Centre claims that it has improved the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, but under its nose, daylight robberies, rapes and murders are taking place. Instead of being bothered about controlling the situation, the government is more bothered about attending the coordination committee meetings,'' he said.

Also present at the demonstration were senior leaders Sajjan Kumar, Jagdish Tytler, H.K.L. Bhagat and Deep Chand Bandhu.
