Revive amateur theatre

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SHIMLA, March 28: Lt. General Vijay Oberoi, GoC-in-C, Army Training Command (ARTRAC), who is also president of Shimla's 162-year-old Amateur Dramatic Club (ADC), has stressed the need for reviving amateur theatre as a potent weapon for awakening the conscience of the people.

He said the theatre as a performing art not only fulfilled creative needs of an individual but sensitised the society towards its social problems.

General Oberoi was speaking on the World Theatre Day, which was celebrated at Gaiety Theatre here yesterday evening in the memory of Herzy Grotowski, a Polish dramatist and author of ``Towards a Poor Theatre.'' Grotowski, who died on January 14, was also a great exponent of Kathakali and yoga.

The ARTRAC chief complimented ADC for its role in keeping the theatre alive and hoped that the club would continue its efforts vigorously. He also honoured distinguished theatre personalities G.R. Sood and S.N. Joshi and Julius and Cladius dean.

The programme started with a trip down the memory lane in which speakers like S.N. Joshi, G.R. Sood and Rama Sharma recounted their experiences and association with Gaiety and other renowned theatre personalities. Two plays, ``Villa for Sale'' staged by the students of Dayanand Public School under the direction of Geeta Sangam and ``Prashan Chinn'' directed by Rupesh Bhimta, were staged.

The ADC, meanwhile has also drawn up a calender of activities for 1999. These include holding of drama competitions and other events relating to theatre.
