Nagpur Cong members oppose Independent legislators' entry

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NAGPUR, March 28: Several Congressmen in the district have opposed the party leadership's move to admit Independent legislators.Five Congressmen, who were denied party tickets in the 1995 Assembly elections, were elected as Independent legislators from Nagpur district. Of these, Sunil Kedar and Deorao Radke initially supported the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance. But soon, both became alliance critics and moved closer to Congress leaders. Kedar even enjoyed a brief spell as Minister of State.

Anil Deshmukh, elected from Katol constituency, continues to be a Minister of State in the alliance government, as does Ramesh Bang, elected from Kalmeshwar constituency. Bang has also remained an alliance supporter, both inside the legislature and outside. Yet another alliance supporter, Ashok Gujar, gave up his Ramtek seat and made an unsuccessful bid to the Lok Sabha.Radke's name figured in the first list of Independents likely to be admitted to the Congress. But even before the process to make themassociate members of the Congress legislature wing was set in motion, local Congressmen came out with a statement opposing his entry into the party.

They have dubbed Radke as a `rank opportunist' and alleged that he quit the Congress when he was denied the party ticket. He then supported the alliance government till it served his purpose and switched loyalties again, when he found alliance prospects to be bleak in the forthcoming Assembly elections. Admitting such a leader into the party fold would have a demoralising effect on its cadre, they said in a letter to Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee president Prataprao Bhosale.

The signatories include grassroot leaders, presidents of the tehsil Congress committees, Youth Congress committee, Congress Sewa Dal committee, Mahila Congress Committee, directors of the Land Development Bank and Agriculture Produce Market Committees and village sarpanchs from Kamptee constituency.A section of senior leaders holding important positions in the party are alsoexpected to come out against the move. Among them, former MPCC President Deshmukh has already made his views known through statements.
