At the end of the acrimonious and chaotic Annual General Meeting in which blows were exchanged and attempts made by support of rival candidates to gatecrash into the meeting, Sumathipala was declared winner by a 79-11 margin over lone rival Clifford Ratwatte, uncle of Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumarathunga.

Former cricketer and television commentator, Saliya Ahangama was elected secretary.

Ratwatte later alleged that he and his supporters were prevented from taking part in the AGM and that he was kicked by Sumathipala which prompted him to stage a walk out.

Ratwatte, who entered the fray at the last minute vowing to cleanse the administration of the high profile body, and nine other candidates for various other posts latersent a letter to the board secretary questioning the credentials of members who were permitted to cast their votes.

Ratwatte described the election procedures followed as questionable and said he would take legal action.Sumathipala denied the charges and said voting was held as per the Board's constitution and with the consent of the majority of members present.Sumathipala said what happened at the elections today was unprecedented and shocking. ``At the end of it I cannot but wonder whether the whole thing was worth it,'' he said adding that the shameful incidents might have a demoralising effect on the national cricket team currently touring India.``This has not happened before and I am ashamed and shocked,'' he said.

At a seperate press conference, Sumathipala showed video clippings of people attempting to gate crash into the meeting, which was followed by scuffles. A few persons with bleeding injuries on their face were also seen.Sumathipala said trouble began when Ratwatte insisted on adjourning themeeting alleging that non-members were present. His objections were rejected by a majority of the members.

Dhammika Ranatunga, Chief Executive of the Board and brother of national captain Arjuna Ranatunga who was with Sumathipala at the press meet, said some unauthorised persons tried to force their way into the meeting, but were prevented by the security staff. (PTI)
