College principals rally for withdrawal of cut in grant

Chandigarh, April 5: The Federation of Managements and principals of colleges in Chandigarh and Punjab, organised a rally at the Chandigarh Housing Board roundabout this afternoon. Supported by various unions of teaching and non-teaching staff, it was held to press for the withdrawal of the cut in 95 per cent grant-in-aid to private colleges.

In a memorandum submitted to Secretary Higher Education G. P. S. Sahi, Punjab government, the agitationists also demanded that the Punjab government release the pending grant for the last two years amounting to Rs 46 crore.

The other demands included immediate release of 95 per cent grant for the first quarter from March to May 1999, inclusion of up to date posts and unaided colleges under the 95 per cent scheme and release of notification for non-teaching staff with effect from January 1, 1996.

The memorandum was signed by Amrik Arora, Ashwani Kumar Sharma, S. S. Sodhi and P. S. Sangha presidents of various principals' federations, Dr Ishwar Singh (president), Giani Harjit Singh (vice-president), Ashwani Kumar Sharma (general secretary) of the Managements Federation; R. P. Sharma and R. K. Parmar of the Punjab and Chandigarh Non-teaching Employees Union and S. S. Hundal and Dr V. K. Tiwari of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union.
