Roving Eye

Golden girls

On Tuesday night, the World Gold Council held the Mumbai round of its design contest, Swarnjali. The finalist's designs were worn by a team of models in a show choreographed by Lubna Adams. On the ramp were Madhu Sapre, Sheetal Malhar and Noyonika Chatterjee.

Another lady with inimitable class is Tina Ambani. Every year she holds the Harmony Art Show, and before the opening she hosts an informal press meet. There she really proves her mettle by greeting the fourth estate with charm and warmth, wowing those she has met before by not only remembering their names but also parts of previously held conversations.

Dressed in a cream sari, showing of her new trim figure, Tina spoke about her passion with eloquence. "Art is so subjective," she said. The idea for the Harmony exhibition came about four years ago. Tina had been involved with Harmony, Reliance's textile division, for some years and thought that it was appropriate for the design company to promote art. It also tied in with Tina'sown interest. "I have always been moved by art -- be it paintings or plays." Which is why she opted to join Harmony in the first place -- Tina wanted to get involved in the design aspect of the company. While in the long run, she would like to open a culture and art centre in the city for the time being she is content with Harmony promoting the arts.

This year, Anju Dodiya and Paresh Maity were chosen as the emerging artists of the year and Ibrahim Alkazi was given the lifetime achievement award. A choice, many of the artists participating in Harmony show, felt tied in with Tina's commitment to art. Kahini Arte-Merchant, who has been a part of this show since it began, said, "I feel proud to be a part of this show." As do other artists like S H Raza and Satish Gujral -- they show their commitment by contributing work every year.

Foot first

This week another woman to hit the headlines was Rina Shah. Her store, Rinaldi, held a fashion show this weekend that was the talk of town. This 24-year-olddesigner unveiled her summer collection of shoes, belts and handbags on Saturday.

And either Mumbaikars have a serious foot fetish or her products are so good that people could not wait to get the first dekko. Her Colaba store was so jam-packed that one could hardly see the product for the people. Among those spotted craning their necks were Sheldon Austin, Sabah Khaleli, Anish and Vineeta Trivedi, Marc Robinson and Sumeet Chopra. From what one could tell Rina's new collection is up to date with all the latest colours and styles from Europe. Footwear in Mumbai has never been so haute.

Men in black

Enough about women. Let's look at what the men were up to this week. Not much. With the exception of A D Singh and Anupam Mayekar (Or Mayenkar). These two are always looking for different ways to keep the city's party animals on their toes. On Thursday night they held a black and white party at Copa Cabana and turned the faux Latino bar into a stock market.

The price of alcohol varied according to thesupply and demand in the bar. And with the next day being a Good Friday ie a holiday, the place was packed to the hilt with wannabe bulls and bears. While no one really noticed figures -- other than the ones on the board -- Svetlana Casper caught the eye. The svelte model dressed in all black looked so sensational that brought to a halt for a few seconds.

Given the money the bar seemed to make, we think its time for Copa to spill over -- extend its premises, get a larger place, anything for more space. It is getting almost too crowded for fun.

And finally... There is really no getting away from the women of this city though. The week really belonged to the ladies. The light-eyed Lisa Ray whose face is suddenly everywhere is back in the news again. It seems that advertisers not only want her on every magazine cover and music video, they also want her on every billboard and kinara ka dukaan. Lisa has been chosen as the new face of Lakme. Quite a coup for a model who hasn't really been pushing hercareer. Lisa has also been busy pursuing her interests in writing and art. But all that will have to be put on hold till she finishes shooting the new Lakme ad films. The model however found the time to celebrate her birthday, this weekend. Though Lisa really did not get a chance to celebrate With a double celebration in order we are sure she had a blast.

Suj, meenal has a really nice pix of lisa on her tackboard I think its lisa otherwise, a pix of her wld be nice, we have pix of rinaldi and of wgc and tina (don't make it a box -- it's too long to be boxed). Just try and put pix with every roving eye -- except copa -- and we'll have a stunning page.
