Top golfers for Chandigarh Open

CHANDIGARH, April 5: The top Indian golfers, who arrived here a week ago to play the All India Amateur Golf Tournament, have all stayed on to play the Bharat Petroleum Samarvir Sahi Chandigarh Amateur Open Golf Championship which begins tomorrow at the Chandigarh Golf Club course here. The tee-off will be at 7.30 a.m.

Local golfer Harmeet Kahlon, Digvijay Singh (AGC, Meerut), Sheeraz Kalra (Lucknow Golf Club), Amit Luthra (Delhi Golf Club) and Shiv Kapoor (Delhi Golf Club) will be among the favourites when it comes to stroke play. They will play 72 holes over the next four days and since they have all been playing the course for the last one week, good scores are expected.

Amish Jaitha, seeded five seed last week, who was unexpectedly ousted in the second round, will be among those wishing to improve their standings in this tournament.

According to Dr G S Kochhar, Chairman Media and Publicity Committee, 26 local golfers, including three caddies have staked their claim in the tournament which has attracted 105 entries. The tournament, sponsored by Bharat Petroleum is open to amateur golfers with handicap of 12 and below. The tournament is being conducted in emmbery of Samarvir Sahi.

Chandigarh win
Chandigarh and Bathinda made it to the Inter-Zonals of the Kendriya Vidayala Schools cricket meet (under 14) after wins in the zonal tournament here today.

Vijay was the star performer for Chandigarh, hitting an unbeaten 73, in his side's run chase of 133 against Ambala. In the other match, Bathinda beat Adampur by six wickets.

Scores: Ambala: 132 in 25 overs lost to Chandigarh: 133 for 4 in 20 overs (Vijay 73 n.o).

Adampur: 56 lost to Bathinda: 56 for 6.

Vimal to lead
Vimal Bali will lead Chandigarh in the 13th All India shooting ball tournament to be held at Ludhiana on April 10 and 11.

Team: Vimal Bali (capt), R R Yadav, Basant Singh, Manvir Singh, Prince, Pritam Singh, Pardesi, Ram Kishan and R K Loomba.
