Functions mark World Health Day

CHANDIGARH, April 7: The World Health Day was celebrated all over the city today. Various functions and seminars were organised on the theme of the year "Active ageing makes the difference."

Indian Medical Association, Chandigarh, celebrated the day in the IMA Complex, Sector 35. Speaking on the occasion Dr V. K. Kak, Director Principal, Government Medical College, said, "It is a myth that elderly persons are a burden on their families and society. In fact, as one gains on years, one becomes more responsible, experienced, punctual and dedicated." Dr Vivek Lal, department of Neurology, PGI, spoke on the "Care of ageing brain" in a function attended by medical personnel from UT and adjoining areas. Dr S. K. Prabhakan, president, IMA, and Dr A. K. Attri, secretary, IMA, expressed the need to organise more such programmes to generate public opinion in favour of the elderly.

A function organised in Sector 45 was presided over by the Block president Sham Lal Kanoujia. Gurbachan Singh, General Secretary, CTCC. A function was also held at the Health and Family Welfare Office, Sector 22. Dr R. S. Sandhu, director, Health Services, UT, presided.

S.A.S. NAGAR: The WHO was celebrated in village Sante Majra by the Family Planning Association of India, Mohali branch, in collaboration with Helpage India in which over 70 old persons from nearby villages took part. Ajaib Singh, senior programme advisor, Helpage India, spoke on the services rendered by the organisation for the older people. Rajinder Nath, PVSM, was the chief guest on the occasion. PANCHKULA: Family Planning Association of India, Panchkula, organised a health camp at Azad colony, in coordination with the Civil Surgeon, Panchkula.

The camp was organised on the occasion of World Health Day, today.

Over 195 persons who attended the camp, were provided counselling, consultation and also free medicines. A general meeting was also held in which slum dwellers were educated on health, nutrition and hygiene.
