Munde orders probe into stripping of Pune woman

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, APRIL 9: Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde today ordered a high-level enquiry into the parading of a woman in the nude in Pune last month. He also told the State Legislature that sub-inspector H S Sawant has been suspended for dereliction of duty in the case.

Munde made the announcement during the debate on an adjournment motion on the issue in the Legislative Council this afternoon. The notice was given by members Rajani Satav and Vyankappa Patki.

Opposition members alleged that a woman was paraded in the nude on March 14, 1999 in Parvatinagar, Pune, but the police refused to take the complaint. They added a former Pune Municipal Corporation corporator was involved in the case and the police was delaying arresting him under political pressure.

Minister of State for Home Ramdas Kadam told the House that a certain Saudagar Kumbhar and Vasanti Nimbalkar eloped on March 10 after falling in love. Nimbalkar was Raut's colleague at the Bhagli Hospital in Pune. Nimbalkar's relatives suspected thatRaut abetted her escape.

``Raut has complained to the police that Vasanti's relatives -- four women and four men -- abused and beat her up and later, stripped and paraded her in the Parvatinagar area. The preliminary investigations revealed that though the accused did strip her, they did not parade her in that condition. It has also emerged that Raut and the prime accused in the case are relatives. Investigations are on,'' Kadam said.

However, his reply failed to satisfy Opposition members. At this point, Munde said a high-level probe will be instituted in the incident. He told the House that sub-inspector H S Sawant, attached to the Swargate police station, has been suspended for dereliction of duty.

Meanwhile, Kadam today told the State Legislature that orders to arrest one Narasimhanand Maharaj -- a follower of spiritual leader Asaram Bapu -- will be issued today.

Narasimhanand has been charged with threatening to kill journalists with a regional newspaper if they continued to criticise Asaram Baputhrough their articles.

Kadam was replying to debate on a calling attention motion in the Legislative Council on a related subject. The notice of motion was given by members Anil Gondane, Hussein Dalwai and Yashwant Gadakh. They alleged that the newspaper, Amaravati Mandal, being published from Amaravati, criticised Asaram Bapu in its issue dated January 16, 1999.

On February 26, 1999, followers of Bapu, while taking out a procession, had shouted slogans against the newspaper and burnt some copies. At this time, Narasimhanand issued an open threat to the journalists that if they continued writing against Bapu, they would be fatally stabbed.

``Narasimhanand has been charged under Section 506 (threat to kill) of the Indian Penal Code and a case has been registered with the Kotwali police station. However, the accused is absconding and orders to arrest him will be issued today,'' Kadam said.
