MUMBAI, APRIL 9: The J F Ribeiro Committee set by the Centre has recommended the setting up of a State Security Council for overall supervision of the police department, according to Deputy Chief Minister Gopinath Munde. In a written reply to Rohidas Patil, Munde informed the Legislative Assembly that the committee also recommended that a State Police Establishment Board be set up to take decisions on transfer, promotion and appointment of police officials.
The committee also felt that the Director General of Police should have a fixed three-year tenure and that there should be an autonomous crime investigation branch.
Disposing of a public interest litigation filed by Prakash Singh, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre to set up a committee headed by Ribeiro. ``Since the Supreme Court will consider the recommendations of the Ribeiro Committee, the State Government is awaiting instructions from the Centre,'' Munde said.
