CHANDIGARH, April 9: UT District and Sessions Judge B.S. Bedi has declined anticipatory bail pleas of G.S. Panaich, Banta Singh and Bhupinder Kaur booked here on March 16 under Sections 406 and 498-A of IPC.In the complaint lodged with the Crime Against Women cell, Rita Panaich had alleged that very soon after her marriage on September 18, 1994, her husband G.S. Panaich and in-laws started harassing and maltreating her for dowry.
She stated that when she came to Chandigarh for the operation of her mother in August 8, 1997, her husband didn't allow her to come back on the grounds that he wanted a divorce from her. She added that her jewellery and other dowry articles were not returned.The husband and in-laws stated before the court that they had returned all the articles. District Attorney, on behalf of the state, however, argued that recoveries were yet to be effected.After hearing both the sides, the Judge dismissed the bail applications.
Acquittal
Lajja Ram, a city resident, earlier booked here on charges of rash driving resulting in death, was today acquitted of the charge after the prosecution failed to prove the case.
UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) Vani Gopal Sharma acquitted Lajja Ram after eye witnesses Pathani Ram and Mohinder Singh turned hostile in the court.The alleged accused was earlier booked on July 4, 1996 under Sections 279, 337 and 304-A of IPC.
The charged against the accused was that he was driving a Swaraj Mazda in the area near water works in Dadumajra and in the process caused death of Mohinder Singh.
Convicted A city resident, Ramesh Gupta, was today convicted for rash driving after he confessed his guilt in the court.He was, however, later released after he furnished a probationary bond in the sum of Rs 10,000 along with one surety of the like amount. The accused was also burdened with litigation cost of Rs 400.
Ramesh Gupta was booked in 1998 under Sections 279 and 185 of IPC. It was alleged that he was driving his car under the influence of liquor and in the process hit a scooter parked near the railway crossing in Modern Complex, Manimajra.
